She's Leaving Home

Although it's not quite as dramatic as the song, tomorrow marks the end of our second week in an empty nest. On Monday, January 7, we dropped Lauren off at the Tubman Quadrangle residence facility on the campus of Howard University. We arrived at BWI on Sunday and did some shopping at a nearby mall for dorm stuff. We thought it would make more sense to get bedding and other supplies locally than to try to pack it or have it shipped. Besides, Lauren was at the baggage limit with just her clothes. What is it with teenage girls and clothes?

We got into Washington around 2:30, checked into our hotel, and headed to dinner around 7:00. We decided on Clyde's of Gallery Place in Chinatown. It was about four blocks from the hotel. Everything was excellent: atmosphere, service, selection; and the prices were reasonable. Our waiter, Hashim, was attentive but not cloying.

On Monday morning we headed over to campus for an orientation session and visits to the usual campus offices: financial aid, residential services, health center, business office, etc. It brought back fond memories of my first days at Alcorn. It was a hectic day that ended with her getting checked into her room and getting acquainted with her new roommates. We headed back to BWI and got back to KC around 9:00.

I think this is probably a time parents look to with mixed emotions, and we're no different. But at any rate, I don't believe we'll be true empty nesters for a few more years. I don't have an official definition handy, but my guess is college years don't count.
